Default Have You Removed Your Backing Board & Headliner?

If you've removed the backing board from the roof, have you experienced much of an increase in ROAD NOISE? It's not like my '90 Base Cherokee is anything approaching sound proofed as it is so I figure it can't add too much more sound.

Also, can I assume that the interior roof metal is painted the same color as the Jeep's exterior? I'm tired of looking at headliners (I wanted a cool, 1950's style picnic plaid but never found one I liked) so I figured the interior Cherokee roof might look good naked.

And last, are there any tips I should know about removing the plastic trim pieces that surround the backing board?

Thanks in advance.

One thing you might take into consideration, It's going to get HOT! I've seen backing boards that were painted and sort of looked okay. Not to my liking though. I've seen a Navajo blanket design that looks impressive if you think that would be good. Where I live, tree camo is popular.

The trim is just screws and clips, nothing to get intense about, just keeping the screws that go with the item removed.

I removed mine maybe 8-9yrs ago because it sagged. Found no backing board to put fabric on. Just dried out foam. The interior roof is painted a lighter green than the exterior of the vehicle. Not bad looking.

As far as the ceiling being hot or cold it is. But it doesn't take very long at all for the a/c or just opening the windows to cool it down. In the winter the heater warms it up quick. One worry I had was condensation forming but it never has.

I had condensation in the winter and much more heat in the summer (no a/c) when I had mine off in the MJ. It was also much louder without the headboard in. About 12-years ago, I recovered with grey fabric that looked like thermal undershirt material that looked nice. About a year ago, I recover it with some charcoal colored felt from Walmart that had just enough sketchiness to mold around the corners and edges. I also painted the roof and inside the side channels with rustoleum, and stuck up a layer of 8mm black self-stick XCEL foam which helped a lot with the noise.

Nope.

My 94 had bare metal for most of it. Do not expect the factory to spend the money to paint the interior of the roof. The most you are gong to see is primer or overspray.

Yes. BE CAREFUL! Old plastic can get brittle. Go slowly.

Above my headliner is painted the same grayish-silver as my floors, not the same color as the exterior, but painted.

Damn! If unpainted then I guess worse scenario I'll wind up with the backing board out and will go ahead with recovering in a headliner. Thanks for your advice, Mark.

Thanks, Spencer. Yours may be the final nail in the coffin for leaving off the backing & headliner. I'd better get back into looking for a good plaid headliner material.

I just removed my headliner and my roof is painted. It's an 87 so not sure if the years matter.

I will say it really echoes with it out, but I'm not planning on leaving it out.

While you guys have them out you should put some weatherstripping in between the roof and the cross supports. I did just for the heck of it and it really helped with the rattle and clanks.
I'll try to find my pictures to show what I'm talking about.

I can't tell from my shots when I did the overhead console install but my was foamed there already if I recall correctly.
Kinda looked like that expanding foam used around a door in construction.
