Well, im new to these forums, been a lurker for a bit, and now im saying hello. I do have and issue with my 89 cherokee 2 door 4wd, striaght six. I currently donest run right. I overheats after a block or so. It has a new watter pump, new dributor, new seals. and 3" lift. the problem is, its over heating and there is this brownish liquid coming from the resivior. First welcome to CF now on to the problem. Check you thermostat or just replace it then you have to "Burp" your system of air. You can do that by jacking up the front end and taking off the cap then squeezing the top hose. This post
HERE may help...Tj

I don't think you can burp an 89' cherokee that way... they're closed systems, so they don't have a cap to leave open.

My son in law has an 89 and does it that way when he does stuff to the radiator. He opens the bottle cap and squeezes the top hose...Tj

Yea it works good but putting a T in the top heater hose is the best way I found to burp the system. I put a
in my 94 and it makes things much easier...Tj

If your coolant is a brownish color a good flush is definitely in order. I also agree with the above on t-stat and burping the system. Also you have a heater control valve that may be clogged or not working properly which could prevent proper coolant flow through the heater core and so on. It is usually connect to the 2 heater core hoses and the main heater hose coming off the t-stat housing. Also look at the clutch fan as it could be bad and not working properly.

Here's how I flush my coolant systems. I drain the fluid completely, then I flush the radiator using my water hose, I then run water through the system by running it through the upper radiator hose till it comes out clear and let the lower hose hang down into a drain bucket. Then put on new hoses, and fill the system with coolant and burp all the air out.

First place I would look at it is local junk yards. Another place would be to look for places that sell locally replacement body parts. Example we have a place called Certifit here locally that sells new replacement body parts. Just remember aftermarket replacement body parts may need a little persuasion to fit properly..

Another way to 'burp' the coolant system on a closed system (Mine was upgraded to open). On the driver side of the valve cover, near one of the rear bolts (by the fire wall) there should be a rubber boot with a wire coming out of it. This is the temperature sender unit. I have heard that by removing this sensor you can remove air from the system. I've never done it though.
