The reason I always recommend the BAFX on here is because it seems to do well with even very early OBD2 vehicles (like my 96...the first year of OBD2). Not all scanners will do that. Because in the early days they were still trying to work out the standard and the scanner has to take that into account to work with the older vehicles. You'll see little warnings on many OBD2 scanners such as "works with any vehicle after 2004...etc.etc.). So I don't have an immediate recommendation for you, but read the reviews and see if you can get some confirmation that it is successfully being used on older Jeeps, or just late 90s Chrysler OBD2 in general. Could save you the trouble of getting one that doesn't do what you need it to.

Working off of jordan96xj's ground work I run the BAFX with a Second Generation iPad.

I had specific reasons for wanting to use an older iPad that used the old 30 pin connector. Nothing to do with the BAFX though.
This is a WiFi one. My research seemed to indicate that with the older iPads Bluetooth ones might not work.
Even though the iPad has Bluetooth.
Something to do with Apple Proprietary crap.
Haven't played with it much and use it with OBD Fusion from the Apple Store so I can't really give a review.
Know squat about iPhones so don't know if that one would work.
Do iPhones have WiFi?

Another option would be an actron cp9575. It has a decent refresh rate for the live data and has read every vehicle I've ever plugged into.

used Scan tool, it produced zero historical codes. Then, I remembered i had battery unplugged to change headlight switch and probably deleted the codes.

Yesterday, one of my symptoms was a little more pronounced. Started vehicle, left parking lot and turned right onto city street. I always go light and slow on the gas when she’s cold. After shifting into 2nd, it was fine for a second, then lost power until I gave a little more gas, noise clunked and then the took off like it was fine. This only happens once, then it’s fine.

thoughts?

Read the live data. Take a pic and post it up of all the data you can.

Still no codes. Symptom was very bad yesterday. During acceleration one time, hesitated and got worse when giving more gas. Let off, CLUNK, then normal. Started great today.

thoughts? Anyone else?

i think I’ll just buy the fuel pump assembly from Jeep (only 590 bucks) and the crank position sensor, as well as temp sensor, just install them and see what happens. Downside, I wont know what the issue was.

But you wont spend $104 for a tool that you will get hundreds of uses out of and that may diagnose your actual problem. Load the parts cannon!

I’m still researching on which scanner to purchase. Our other vehicles are foreign and new, so I’d like to get a scanner I can use with them as well: 16’ Q5 and 19’ S3. Then again, it’s not like I can wrench on them anyway.

The actron cp9670 seems to be the newer version of what I use. I've had good luck with them.

Another recent change in symptoms: I’m now not able to completely fill the tank. Either that, or tank is full and the mechanism to measure fuel level is broken?

tank reads about 3-4 gallons less. So full is now just above 3/4 level. Are these problems connected? Has anyone had similar issues and found a fix?

vehicle is still starting ok when cold. And excessively turns over when warm, and has stalling, hesitation on accelerating around 1-2 gear. Once hesitation stops, engine clunks and picks up quickly.

There are no check engine lights. 1997, with 116k.

Check the wiring and plug at the fuel pump for corrosion or looseness.

Thanks, I’ll take a look. Is there an access panel? Or, just feel around up there and use a mirror/light? Jeep’s life has been in the desert for 20 years, there’s almost zero corrosion/rust anywhere.

I’ll reach up there and find out though.

You probably wont like my answer, but from experience, I would be taking down the entire tank assembly, and related components, check for any blockage, failure, or scum within the tank, hoses etc, replace any suspect components. I have found some tanks and sock filters with so much scum in them, they need complete cleaning out

the scum is a mix of dirt, rust, condensed water and, coagulated fuel and rubber components

thanks for the reply, awg. I’m slightly doubtful that it’s dirty. I purchased the Jeep 2 years (18k) ago from a person that had kept maintenance papers for everything-right down to windshield wiper blades! He was really on top of all services, etc. And, as an older gentleman, didn’t off road, etc. very clean inside and out, low miles. Every vehicle I get gets moderately frequent sea foam treatments, and oil changes at 3k. Then again, old vehicle - you may be right.

I’m just confused at how my issues have flipped a few weeks ago.

a Mopar tech here locally, is confident in crank position sensor, so I’m picking one up tomorrow from local Jeep shop. I’ll report back if that’s the fix.
