Any of you older members remember this about a year ago?

https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/yok...-problem-7120/

Well anyways, replaced the yoke, u-joint, and straps, when I was doing the yoke, I wiggled the pinion just to check the bearing, and its gone, there is play. I figured I could wait till next pay check, but now I relized that it is too far gone, It was making way too much noise today, so now its parked and I will drive the car.

Ok, done venting heres the question

Ordering the bearing, and seal anything else that I should get that I dont know about while I am there?

You removed the yoke from the replacement axle after the first time?

Or is this the original axle fixed again?

I'm confused..

Are you reusing the original pinion nut and torqueing to spec?

The pinion will have considerable movement with the yoke removed. It will actually move enough to jam the carrier in place and not allow the left rear tire to roll forward at all. I learned this on the junk 87 when it was being hauled off. The yoke had been removed and we were trying to winch it up on a tow dolly and it was dragging the truck backwards instead of the Jeep moving forward. Stuck the yoke back on and tightened it down and all moved smoothly from there. So..... your bearing may not be bad, just normal movement with no yoke in place.

Lynn, without seeing the amount of slop for myself, it's hard to say. If you think that the slack is minimal, then you should be ok to R&R the bearing & seal. I would take a real good look at the race, and make sure it is good as well. I have also heard of the race spinning in the housing, and if that has happened, you are screwed!! Let us know what you find once you get in there!! HTH!!

if you are lucky its just the preload bearing.

the pinion bearing could also be on its way too.

hard for me to tell without seeing it.

but you are SUPPOSED to get a new pinion nut every time you remove it. they are a special locking style nut.

I usually just use red loc-tite and take a chisel and stick a few notches in the thread. never had one come loose.

Thanks guys, I forgot to add some information, I hope this doesnt change it

Yesterday I replaced the yoke and yadda yadda yadda, and all my vibrations were gone, and to day just running around town I heard a new noise that goes with the vibration i felt in the floor, that happens upon acceleration. It sounds like a wheel was coming loose, the kinda slight hitting noise, but i walked around and checked ALL the lug nuts with my tire iron and they were fine, thats why I thought it was the bearing.

Only makes the sound upon acceleration

did an experiment and took out the rear drive shaft, drove it around the block on just the front, the noise/vibration was gone, so its definatly something in the rear

not likely, but does happen

if the race is spinning in there it likely ate away at the axle housing
