Question half way

My 01 XJ slips out of 4H and grinds when lever is pulled to the 4H stop position.
It works fine in 4WDwhen the lever is pulled halfway between 2H and 4H.
Handle adjust? Linkage adjust? New case?

How's the fluid level? check that first, and then adjust the lever.

Perhaps the transfer case shift bushing has worn out or fallen out. Any modifications like transfer case drop?

Shot motor or trans mounts can throw the alignment way off as well. If the linkage bushing are shot, I heard a few people post good reviews of this improved setup. There are a bunch like it, but none this inexpensive.
