Default Gunk in front axle housing

While replacing the front wheel bearing hub assemblies and axle seals, I noticed that there is some nasty gunk in the housing (pictures aren't great but you get the idea). From what I can tell the gunk does not seem like it is in the differential gears but not positive since I haven't taken the cover off yet. Other than the plastic shield thing (in the 3rd picture), there is no seal to keep crap out correct ? Is there any real danger if gunk gets in here ? With only the plastic cap to shield from mud/gunk it seems like gunk would get in pretty regularly when off-road. Thanks in advance for any insight to this before I go reassembling everything.

Thanks guys, both spot on great responses and I really appreciate the quickness. I have previously seen some leaking from driver side of the housing after some highway miles, sounds like I may need axle seals in the differential (part #5's) ?

Thanks,

Nathan

Sounds like you need to change them (#5).....most auto parts stores should have them or be able to get them...I would do it now since you have it this far apart.
