my 95 is making grinding noises. particularly accelerating from a stop and at low speeds. seems to go away when I get going at a consistent speed or when slowing down.
nothing seems different in park and neutral. drive and reverse make similar sounds. heavy vibration when stopped in drive or reverse...
Tranny problem I assume....tranny mount?
what am I looking for to spot a bad mount?
Tranny is my assumption but other suggestions are appreciated.....

noticed clunking when accelerating from a stop until about 5 mph....
yes it's more red than brown and doesn't smell burnt. transmission mount looks like it's slanted to one side....think I will take my bike over to advanced for a tranny mount

Couldn't agree more. An easy check is to try and twist DS. If there's play, then the u joint is going.Originally Posted by salad
That clunk is a sign - sounds like you have a U-joint thats toast.

The problem could be a bad engine mount, U-joint, front driveshaft cardan joint, or a few other things. It's time for an undercarraige inspection, and if you don't know what you're looking for, take it to a professional for evaluation. This is not something that shadetree mechanics can diagnose over the internet.
so changed the tranny mount.....still making noise. rough idle in drive and reverse is gone so it seemed to help but now the tranny is just making noise. in park i can climb under and hear it from up near the front somwhere cant quite tell where, somwhere near the front axle...

Mine was shot but didn't make that noise lolOriginally Posted by Gee oh Dee
Motor mounts?
whats the best way to check them....
maybe the clunk is u joint only one or two times coming out of a stop, they seem OK not good but not shot.....
but a bad u joint would not cause the tranny sound im hearing in park. doesnt sound like the flex plate, not a knocking sound. more like scraping metal sound....loose/shot bearing somewhere?

Mine let the motor move enough to make a grinding noise.
If its doing it at idle its not a ujoint...
Exhaust making contact with something?
