grinding/rubbing metal sound coming from the front...
ive been having transfer case issues recently when i took the jeep out yesterday i noticed a rubbing or grinding sound coming from the drive train so i figured it was probably a u joint so i took the ds out(its stuck in 4wd) and im still hearing the noise...it only happens when im going slow but as soon as i hit the brakes it stops??? and i can tell when driving in reverse it definitely doesnt roll back like it should...what could it be??? messed up diff gears? broken/bent axle? REALLY bad wheel bearings???
help is greatly appreciated as always...this is my DD so i need to get her reliable again...

"as soon as i hit the brakes it stops" Maybe pull a wheel or two and inspect the front rotors and pads. Something you want to do now and then anyway.
"in reverse it definitely doesnt roll back like it should" sticking caliper/badly worn pads?
Maybe something narley in your T-case, (check the fluid), but I'd look at the brakes first. Does it role back OK with the T-Case in neutral?

I changed the transfercase fluid last week and haven't really been able to drive it since but I took my front drive shaft out to see if that would temporarily cure it until I have a day off but still the same sound..I will be up early before work tomorrow to inspect the rotors and brakes. I've never owned a 4x4 or even had an axle break or ruined a diff/gears...how would I know if I did one of the two? (Please excuse me if its a dumb question)

You should post what you have so some of the more knowledgeable guys can share specifics. You can always pull the diff cover and have a look. Don't break the bolts! Small easy job turns into a real pain. Sometimes a good smack with a hammer, and/or going IN just the slightest tad will help them break free.
Haven't seen a post of a broken axle...yet. U-joints are a common problem. Squeaking, clicking and clacking...or worse. Binding? Guess maybe if it sat a coon's age.
Pistons binding/sticking in the caliper happens. Brake doesn't release, gets hot, wears everything out. Makes a grinding/rubbing metal sound coming from the front.

Wow, I just logged in and was going to post for the same problem. I am pretty confident in my case that it is not drive train related (you never know though) but brake related. ( I replaced all u joints and fluids) I am going to pull the tires off and look this weekend, same thing it sounds like though, when I go straight the grinding goes away within a couple hundred feet, if I turn at all it starts grinding again,if i lightly step on the brakes it goes away until I take my foot off the brake then it comes back. I when going forward the brakes feel perfect, no squealing or grinding. the noise grinds with the rotation of the wheel. could it be as simple the pads flopping around? are there springs that hold the pads away from rotor? could it maybe be a wheel bearing?

I,ve never lifted anything. Actually most of what I have is squished. Are your brake lines pulling on the caliper when you turn?
I do have one XJ that sits up OK, but its a Jag XJ6, (350 Power).

Look carefully at the dust shield. They get bent and you get that noise quite often. It can groove your rotors too.
