Default Grinding noise when letting off gas.

Whenever I let off the gas, I get a grinding noise from beneath me. I have no front shaft in and it's the stock rear shaft. It's got about 7 inches in the back and yes I know i need an sye but there's barely vibes. Probably from the long arm cross
Member dropping it a bit. But when I let off the gas, it only happens sometimes and lasts about a second. Imgunna assume it's the u joints in the rear drive shaft but I want a second opinion just to be safe. Happens around 40 mph

I had my trans off the truck when i separated them. Prolly made it easier.

I have nice wrenches, too, that helps.

its your yoke being to far out of the t case causing it to have some slack when its not loaded up from accelerating or deceleration. my 98 dose the same thing im not to worried about it for now.

Figured bring back this thread than start a whole new one.

I have a 3 inch Lift with 31s and I get the same problem.
When I let off the gas not only do I get the grinding noise but I also get the feeling off a rough jerk. Like the XJ hit a mini wall. Haha hard to explain but it feels like it decreases speed too fast.

what year do you have, 1997-2001 xjs are prone to driveline vibrations. even with three inches i had an annoying vibration. i dropped my transfer case about 3/4 of an inch and everything went away. you could probably check your u joints also as the vibrations could tip an already worn joint over the edge.

It's an old thread. It's the slip yoke that was making these sounds and was fixed with an sye.

I got a 2000 XJ, I will consider getting the transfer case drop. Any recommendations to a company?

The noises don't happen so much until i reach about 40mph

Save yourself $40 and go buy some square steel stock and just drill the holes. Maybe $6 total w/ a drill bit.
