Djb has pretty much stole my thunder.

I have to say one the best ways to tell what you want to run is by reviewing uoa (used oil analysis) and voa (virgin oil analysis). These will tell what's in the oil and how did those detergents, additives and just plain oil perform.

Start with the lowest first number and just coordinate the second with where you live and what your comfortable with after some research. I run 5w-30 royal purple, I would run 0w-40 RP if it wasn't so darn expensive and easier to find. I wouldn't run anything but rp, just my preference. Also upgrade your oil filter to the oversized one when you replace it and I would suggest the purolator p-one.

Another oil debate. It's all about personal preference (within standards). I use Mobil 1.

Ok guys I am going to chime in here. In 1991 I bought a new Ford Ranger for most of its life I put Quaker State 10w30 and whatever oil filter. Fram, STP or a Ford one. I didn't care as long as it was the cheapest one. I changed my oil every 5000 miles. I traded that truck in on a new Suburban in 2002 with 247,000 + miles on it. It ran great at that time. It did not burn/use oil and it did not smoke. The Suburban currently has 224,000+ miles and has mostly Castrol poured in it 5 and 10w. And again whatever oil filter ie fram and STP. It has a oil pan leak and a coolant leak right now (soon to be fixed) but the engine still runs good. I changed the oil in it when the stupid light on the dash said to. As for my XJ I bought it new in 1997 and mostly put Castrol in it again 5 or 10w. And whatever filter.I am sure it was mostly Fram. Changed the oil at about every 5000 miles. I had 228,000+ miles on it before I blew it up because I neglected to fix a coolant leak. Bad idea. Percrastination is the thief of time. So I am thinking that Fram and other cheap filters along with 10w30 cant be all that bad. No??

If Fram worked well for you, then it did. Can't argue with success. But with so many choices out there, why buy something questionable when you can buy better for the same money?

10w30 is fine. Oil brand is a ford/chevy debate. IMO most any of the major brands are fine, and quite a few of the store brands too. Wal Mart's SuperTech for example (or "peak" or "stp" or whatever bottle it gets dumped in by Warren, Exxon or Shell- depending on geography) gets pretty good reviews at BITOG.... those folks spend far more time obsessing over oil than I do, lol.

I pay about 4.50 for a STP or Fram.

I agree 100% What kind of oil you use will not make a difference. What kind of filter you use will.

I am going to add something here about my vehicle maintance that I think is also important. I was a little OCD about changing my air filters. I would put a new one in every 10 to 20 thousand miles. I did spent the money on replacing them a lot, but again it was the cheap Fram or STP. I am thinking thats way earlier than recomended. But I believe having a good clean air filter would really help the oil filter do its job. No??

About the same here. Mopar filter is about $2 more, Purolator classic is about a buck less. I grab the Mopar, Wix, Purolator..whichever is on sale.

STP is a Champion labs filter. Same people who make the Mobil 1 filter (although they are not the same thing). From what I've read the STP is the exact same filter as the AC Delco Duraguard. Different color and logo, same guts.

There is nothing at all wrong with Fram (or STP) air filters. They work just fine. IMO no reason to pay more.

2 most important things in my opinion. You gotta keep the dirt out to have any success from whatever oil filter you use.

I run Mobil 10w30 High Mileage oil and a Napa Filter. I would not hesitate to use a Purolator or Champ Labs filter as well. I also add some Seafoam and run it for about a 100 miles before an oil change.

My Dad was an over the road truck driver and always said "Oil and Filters are cheap. Change them often." I feel the same way.

If you do a lot of offroading, do not go by mileage alone on your change intervals. Your engine may run all day and you only go a few miles.

I run Schaeffer 10W-30 and a Bosch D+ in my Jeep and the same in my 2007 Honda Civic that my wife drives. This combination is awesome, I couldnt be happier with it.

Let me tell you why.

I bought the Civic new off the lot in 2007, for the first 30k miles I would let the dealer change the oil until I switched to Mobil Full Synthetic and a Mobil filter. I could go 5k to 6k miles and not consume a drop of the Mobil and it would stay honey colored until about 3,500 miles.

Cut to 80k miles and I give it to my wife to drive, who is extremely HARD on vehicles. She has put 16k hard miles on it in 4 months!

Anyway, this car is a 5-Spd and she had to learn how to drive a manual when she took it over. Anyway, at 80k and before she started driving it, I changed the oil with Mobil like I always did.

After about a month of driving it approximately 3500 miles she made the mistake of telling me that she forgets to shift into OD on the highway all the time, meaning she drives in 4th gear at 70-75 mph for about 35 mins a day at about 4500 RPM. SO, when I heard that I thought I better check the oil, when I did it was a quart low and completely black. I thought WTF! I add the quart.

At 6k miles I go to change the oil and it had consumed another 1/2 qt and there were metal shavings in my oil catch pan.

So by now over 6k miles it consumed 1.5 qts.

I decided to spend the little bit of extra money and get the Scaeffer oil and switched to the Bosch D+ filter because I have heard good things at this point.

I put the Schaeffer in and crossed my fingers. After 4k miles it had only consumed 1/2 qt and was still clean, not like new but was still transparent and honey in color. I add the 1/2 qt.

At 7,500 I changed the oil. At this point it was still not black and only consumed 1/2 qt over the 7,500. After draining it and inspecting the oil catch pan, I couldn't find any metal shavings in the pan like I did with the Mobil oil.

It is now on it's second dose of the Schaeffer and I couldn't be happier. I am sticking to this combo from now on. I am really impressed with it.

I use Schaeffer in my Jeep 4.0 as well with a Mobil filter and at 4,500 miles the oil was still honey colored. Amazing stuff.

I now run the oversized Bosch D+ and Schaeffer 10W-30 in it.

I am not saying that Mobil oil is not a great oil by any stretch of the imagination. It served me and my driving habits wonderfully for 50k miles. It just isn't as good as Scaeffer's based on my personal experience.

Plus I get a case of 12 qts for $75, almost the exact same price I was paying for the Mobil.
