Any examples? I'm new to automobiles so excuse my ignorance. My folks normally just drive to the dealership and get the oil and filter changed, no specifying what brands. I on the other hand, I like getting my hands dirty, but due to the previous statement, cant learn from either of them.

Of those choices, 0W30 would flow the easiest at any temp below operating temp.....at operating temp, all of those weights (in the pop quiz) flow the same....Motor Oil 101.

Yeah, red through Motor Oil University today. Good stuff. They all go to 10cS at 212 degrees. So wouldnt 0w-30 or 0w-20 be best for the Jeep and not the manual reccomended 10w-30?

I wouldn't use XX20 in any vehicle unless the manual so stated. However, I'd be willing to bet that if 0W30 or 0W40 were readily available 20+ years ago, as they are now, the manual would have said either would be acceptable to use.
Regarding the K&N filter, I believe it's made by someone else and has a $6 nut on the end.

If you change your oil every 3,750 miles or less a Napa silver will be fine. 7,500 miles, go Napa Gold.

Hudson, you'll learn in time that whatever Cruiser54, Djb383, and a few select others says is the law. They provide excellent advice. Purolator is also a good filter, but absolutely stay away from the orange can of death. Some of us have cut a few open, and it's something out of an engine's horror movie. lol
