promotes rust by holding water. the rear lower quarters are KNOWN for rusting out due to holding h20.

and you're missing the point. there won't be any air flow in there. the amp will get too hot, and could start on fire, burn out, or fail.

no matter how much fire retardant sound deadener you put in there, it's a crappy spot for an amp.

at the very least, get some 12v computer fans and mount them into the cover panel you're making. two for sucking air in, two for pushing it out. all must be equal CFM.

and...if your radio is on, you're using the amp. unless you put a manual control switch on it to turn it on and off.

i would go to fry's electronics and get some 3" 12volt fans wire them in there. my buddies runs 3 fans per amp and boy do they push air! its like $6-$12 per fan but well worth it. You want to keep the heat away from that as much as possible and if you are running a chop top with diamond plate over it the sun alone is going to heat the enclosure up! so make some vents in the diamond plate like they do for dryer vents on the side of the house and place the fans in the vents.

I just bolted it to back side of the back seat . It was out of the way, and got plenty of circulation.

I searched the internet looking for ideas as I didn't want to loose my cargo space, check out subthump.com I ordered the box from them, put my amp under the drivers rear seat and havn't looked back!http://subthump.com/Jeep-Sub-Boxes/Cherokee

I'll say it like this. If it were my amp, I wouldn't put it there.

Y'all are making me nervous. I have 3 amps under my rear seat with no fan. They are only turnned up about 1/2 way, but still. They are the new sony x-1 mini amps. (about the size of a bible) I'm gonna nead to cheak out the heat situation real soon cuz I don't carry an extinguisher in this jeep. :/

1) Amp in cubby-hole = bad idea due to lack of air flow - as said before. If you vent the area well, then okay, but if stealth was your inspiration, that goes out the window.
2) Under front seats also bad idea - not that they would have fit there with my power seats anyway. When I recently flooded the XJ, the amps would have fried under there since I had water up to the middle of the doors, with 33" tires.
3) Under rear seats - no good, and both reasons above apply for this location: lack of air, risk of water damage. Mind you, all 3 locations have worked for one person or another.
I'm thinking back of rear seat the best location, and they can be hidden there if needed.

My set up:

Been this way for years, altho the amp in the pic has been changed to a larger dedicated Sub amp (and a 6 channel to the left of it) & raised up another few inches. Amps are covered with the seat cover on the back seat, and when I'm doing long drives I pull the seat cover back to promote air flow. I push those suckers hard at times too, but they have never overheated even with the seat cover on.

FWIW, there has never been moisture in my cubbyhole, even after I dunked the XJ, even after we used rivets to install armor.

I was thinking of putting a couple of mini amps in the space above the sound bar in the rear.

Just a thought, and I haven not measured to see exactly if they will fit but I believe the new Sony amps would fit. Could hide a PC fan or two up in there too.

I may have to check that out, although I lack the funds to do any of it at the moment. This YJ build is sucking every penny and then some!!!

I guess at this point, there's no point in saying that it's a terrible idea. That amp looks small enough to go under the seat (not that mounting an amp under the seat is the greatest idea...). I fit my old alpine under the drivers seat. I had to put it towards the back, but it fits nicely.

with the seat all the way back.

Vibes aren't gonna do anything to an amp, ive been running this for two years screaming everywhere, booming the neighborhood and still running great. I have so much bass my hair flies around when the subs hitt.....

thats pretty pricey to me. The going rate for one by a manufacturer is around $100. I know what the feedback says but still, I havent heard any complaints from people that bought the enclosures elsewhere for much cheaper.

ya not the best place for an amp....if your amp runs really efficient and doesn't heat up, you should be ok, but if it gets warm much, i wouldn't put it there, i have had an amp catch on fire before, not fun, and if its behind a panel....better have a fire extinguisher. i put mine on top of my sub box and hid the wires. looks clean, never over heats, and is right there should i need to do any tweaking. but ya, i would watch it in that location, maybe try bumpin your system really loud for a couple hours and then feel your amp. i know mine only gets mildly warm, but i have had many that would get so hot i almost couldn't touch them, so just be careful with it there, noone likes a burned-to-the-ground jeep lol
