I have an opportunity to get a Dana 44 front and rear out of a Grand Wagoneer for $100. Does anyone know if these will fit under an XJ without tons of modifications?

Plenty of people have done it.
Search for a write-up or 2 and you'll be set.
You'll need to redo the coil mounts since GWs were front leafs and a few other things. Just some cutting and welding. Pretty easy for what it is.

the first thing is that these axles are wider than yours. The second, you will have to fabricate custom tie rods to steer it. The biggest thing is all the brackets to attack the stock XJ suspension components to. This will include a truss over the pumpkin for the drier side top link. Also make sure the front differential is on the drivers side.

Check out this build thread. It's a d44 waggy axel with a TNT truss. Hope it helps.
