Hi all,
Today I just finished replacing the old 91 XJ seats with seats form a Gran Cherokee. This was a three hour simple project after brainstorming the project first. The seats fit very nicely but some mods need to be done to the original Xj sleds/brackets that bolt to the floor since the seat brackets form the Gran Cherokee are way to wide. The trick is to weld two steel bars under each seat from the Gran Cherokee and than drill holes in the steel bars for proper fit to original Xj sleds / brackets. This was a lot of fun and the difference is unbelievable.
Best wishes,
Jake

Come on Leon, you can't tease us like that without pics of the process. Do you know how many times the question has come up of how to install 95+ XJ seats or ZJ seats in a 94 or older XJ? Way to darn many and here you go and do it, then leave us guessing. Shame shame

Ok here we go:
The mod is pretty simple. Use your old original bracket because it fits perfectly with the mounting bolts already in the floor. The drawing (I am not an artist) shows the top view of the original bracket. The trick is to weld two steel flat bars on top of the original bracket wide enough to cover the new width of the Gran Cherokee seats. If you do this sufficiently and strong you’ll be good to go. Hope this helps.
Note: Before any welding is done make sure you rest the new seat on top of the old bracket. From there you will see the length of the bars needed. In my case they measured 36 cm in length. Do your adjustments as needed, and be patient, remember to use a strong flat bar and pay attention do details when you weld. Again I hope this gives you the general idea.

ive seen this done before but didnt involve any welding... there was a write up... something about re-drilling the holes on the ZJ seats to use the XJ bolt holes (also used the XJ brackets)

Leon, how thick was the flat stock you used, and movement/flex in the seat from the metal being thin? Would you use thicker if you were to redo it?
Heres a pic of one of the guys at NAXJA who added ZJ seats to a pre 95 XJ. They used angle thinking it would make the seat more secure/firm.
I have a set of ZJ leather and another set of ZJ cloth seats in garage, i may try this conversion this weekend. I'll take pics if i do.

I just went to the bone yard and drilled out the spot welds on the front seat mount brackets and chiseled them off from a 95+ then welded them to the floor of my 89. One rear bolt has to be relocated. Easy mod and cheap like me.

SUBscribe. I think I'll be doing this as soon as I find some GC seats. How tall are you and how much head clearance do you have? I'm six-foot-five, so a taller seat would be of concern to me.
