Default Grade 5 or Grade 8:

I've had a few folk say that Grade 5 bolts would be enough since there are so many in the bumper. I'd like some input. Are Grade 8 bolt nessecary?

grade 5 is fine. this is different than tow hooks, but most organizations require/prefer grade 5 bolts to grade 8 for fastening tow points. grade 5 bolts will stretch and show signs of wear before breaking, grade 8 will not, they will just snap without warning, (obviusly under larger load) obviously you are not gonna have enough force on there to stretch grade 5, or snap grade 8 bolts with that design

snuck a poll in there, nice. i say keep the grade 5 because you already have them. if you had grade 8 in it, it would be fine also.

We use grade 5 in the oilfield just for that reason. I say grade 5 all the way.

I say go with the grade 5, they should be up to the task at hand, and it will save you a couple bucks too. I would imagine that grabbing 20 grade 8 fasteners would cost a pretty penny compared to the G5 fasteners..

IMHO for the intended purpose I wouldn't use anything but Grade 8 but that is just me. I do realize you will have a few bolts to hold things but since the intended use is for extraction I would not feel cozy with Grade 5 bolts there. It's one thing to hold lights on but not a bumper.

i'm gonna repeat myself here, but grade 8 would've been fine here, but i say 5 since they're in.

but the preferred, and usually mandatory bolts for extraction points are grade 5. the clubs i've been in, grade 8 were not allowed on recovery points.

exactly, i have 8 G8 holding my rear on and 6 G8 holding my front bumper on, i have had to get tugged on and or pull someone else several times and I can confidently say your gonna have to rip my frame in half before your rip my bumpers off!

I wasn't aware that Grade 5 were that much better.. I have always lived by the theory when it comes to my vehicles use grade 8 for everything that needs strength.

the way you have it mounted grade 5 is way more than you need
but grade 8 would not cost more than 3 bucks more

I can say with confidence that if you make a lone bearing plate to match the bracket

you could use any bolt and it would hold because added surface aria
will create 10 times the hold and less stress on any individual bolt

this is how i see it to grade 5 is for stuff that wont see any load put on it grade 8 is for recovery and suspension pieces that either move or have load on them don't cheap out there is only a couple of dollars difference when you are using that amount. go good or go home broke
