TV Cable Adjustment
To adjust the TV cable you:
1: Push in and hold the release button
2: While holding in release button, push "conduit" in as far as it will go
3: Release button
4: Rotate throttle to WOT, some people do this with the gas pedal. Others do it from the engine compartment.
5: Hold at WOT for a few seconds, cable should ratchet out a click or two.
6: Your TV cable should now be properly adjusted, take it for a test ride.

had 45 minutes yesterday so i tried to take out the NSS, but couldn't get it off. i got the screw out, took off the nut, but then couldn't pull the thing off. didn't have much time so i'm sure i woulda wrenched it off eventually, but is it normal for it to be tough to pull off?? do i need to get a screwdriver in behind it and wrench it out? i didn't wanna break it and didn't have much time so i just put the screw, nut, and plugged it back in. help please, thx

yes you need to coax it off...be carefull you can break it...easily....
what i did was take a screw driver iwth a fairly wide tip..put it behind the sensor where the linkage rod comes out of it and twist...till it pops off.

mine was doing the same thing, I'd get on the interstate and get up to 70mph and it would be at 3100 rpm the only temporary cure to this was while at 70 put it in Neutral, turn key to off for 5-10 seconds (do not do this in a curve as you will not have power steering while key is off) and crank it back up and put it back into drive. when i did this it would kick into OD and my RPMs return to normal 1900-2100 RPMs for 70 MPH and it stays normal until I'd put it in park and switch it off. I did this for 2 months this summer (against my will but we were barely making ends meet fiscally so there were no funds to fix it until earlier this month when it got some love!)
the cause to my problem was only the NSS HOWEVER the diagnostic codes were indicating NSS, Transmission range sensor, and both O2 sensors
mine is a 2000 2WD 4.0

also .. looking up TPS replacement, do the '93 engines need ohm adjusted ? my 90 renix does (manual trans) .. the BWD part I found online looks to be un-adjustable
this quesiton refers to '93 auto 4l .. trans is shifting like said above
1-2 takes high rpm, 2-3 is fast .. not sure if OD is kicking in, rpms seem kinda high doin 65 (no tach gauge to watch) .. park to drive has womp to it
figure i would start here .. this is my 1st auto xj .. want it running smooth for emissions .. thanks

93 TPS is bolt on and go. Not adjustable. Sounds like yours is bad.
Also for future reference since the NSS came up- cleaning it is only half the job. The spring-loaded contacts also lose pressure over the years. While it's apart gently stretch the springs a bit to restore contact pressure.

For anyone who hasn't done the NSS before... I literally just did the NSS clean for a side job having never done one before. I would recommend anyone do it. It was stupid easy. I had heard about how difficult it is to get the thing off, and that was what I was the most worried about.
When you get down there and really take a look at it, the getting it off part becomes easier. After removing the adjustment bolt, bend the lock tabs out of the way on the main nut. With the main nut off, you can see that the shaft comes through the middle, and the NSS is clamped down onto it by the nut. I simply soaked it in penetrant, screwed the nut back on just enough that it would engage the threads without clamping, put a screw driver behind the nut and used the edge of the trans pan for leverage. Popped right off. This was on a rust belt police XJ also... So if one were to stick, this would be it.
With the NSS off the trans, taking it apart and cleaning it was simple with some electric cleaner, emery cloth, and die-electric grease when putting it back together.

I would check: All these things are easily replaced/cleaned. The nss is a pain but not worth 800 bucks to get fixed imo, 9/10 you can get away with just cleaning it like previously mentioned. I would just replace the tps/speed sensor. They are cheap and go bad anyways. Avoid the headache.
1.TPS ( 30$ two torx screw on throttle body/replace)
2. Speed sensor ( on transfer case/replace )
3. NSS ( Take off and clean )
4. Adjust TV cable.
Can you get into overdrive/ Will your trans kickdown?
