well 87's are known for having the rare D-44. Jy's are your best bet. 97 plus cherokee's have 8.25 which will be fine if you only plan on going to 33's.

Just so you will know the drivers side of the transfercase has a round disc on the backside that is a little larger than a 50 cent piece which has numbers on it that will identify the unit as either a 242J or a 231J. Then you will know for sure.
Nice looking Jeep and yes that is a D35 rear. Upgrade to a Cryco 8.25 from a 97+ Cherokee. They are plenty strong enough for up to 33s and will soon have the Aussie Locker available for it.

Okay...
Your rear end is a D-35... In your second picture you can see the 35C in the webbing around the center section.

Also, early model Non-C clip D-35 had a screw plug.

Third.... unless the PO changed the transmission and rear D-shaft, OR changed the input shaft on the 94 T-case, you don't have a 94 T-case. The 94 would have a 23 spline input shaft. Your 89 would have a 21 spline output on the transmission.

not sure what all he changed but he said he bought a 94 for parts and when the trans chain broke he put the TC out of the 94 in this one.
