Unhappy The Good and the Bad

First the Good: I got a new to me XJ a couple of weeks ago.
Almost finished my RE Lift.
Still need Shocks, Tires and an SYE.
Now the Baaaadddd, the engine had a Low end noise, so I desided while I'm awaiting the rest of the lift I would open up the oil pan.
The Rod bearings are toast, pulled the first two.
Also the Crank is scored
Metal shavings in the pan and apparently the previous owner had already did head work and replaced #2 Piston as it does not match the others.
Also looks like the bottom end had water setting in it for quite some time.
So my new to me XJ will be setting for several months because I do not have the money for a new engine ($1,800) unless I sell my
Cruiser, Honda VTX 1800C

get a short block and do the build your self you can do it for around 900 or so that way have you pulled the head to see what it looks like. you could just take it and have it machined for a few hundred and buy the parts and it would be even cheaper to put it together your self.
