Here's the short of it: trying to replace my stock speakers on my '91 XJ. I am using 5.25" Xplods for the front doors, and 6x9" Xplods for the rear hatch. I have a Sony Xplod head unit, and the speakers were free. I know there's people who hate Sony, but please save it for another day. Anyways, got the driverside panel door off, kinda. I cannot figure out how to detatch the little door lock rod. I have manual lock doors btw. Everything else is loose, but the lock will not let go of the rod. How do I get this the rest of the way off?
Also, the new speakers use blade style connectors. So I cut the stock connector off the wires and had the intention of just crimping (solder iron is dead). IIRC, the two wires that were connected were green and red w/black stripe. If I read the wiring diagram in Haynes right, green is power, the red/black is ground. We hooked everything up, and no speaker. It would not work. Stock passenger side still works. We tried switching the wires: no luck. That speaker will not work. The stock drivers side worked, but would randomly cut out sometimes. I'd have to smack the door panel to get it working every now and then.
So, what's the deal with this damn thing? Am I right with green being power, red/black stripe being ground? Did the stock little connector also have some special whacko mini-fuse or something built into? I'm about to just rip the doors off and say
it. I appreciate any help!

slide the whole lock/handle bezel thru the slot in the panel-panel slides to left then up after clearing mirror trim...

Starting at the top- could be the head unit, could be wiring in between HU and speakers has a short, could be speakers. Idk. It's all sorts of things until you can start finding where wattage ends or gets weird. The stock wiring in jeeps is notorious for weakness so grab a multi meter and start poking at speaker leads to see if they are getting anything..

Theres no need to take the lock apart, or even take any of that apart if thats what you have done. Just take out the 3? screws holding it in and just move the door panel to one side, the just kinda push the door lock plate (thingy?) out of the hole in the door panel. Just make sure not to break the plastic pieces sticking out towards the rear, those hold the plate down.
Its definitely not easy getting them out, (until you figure it out) but do it once and you'll have it down. I know i for one about just ripped the damn things off, and in the process of doing so figured out they slipped through if you tried it at the right angle.
And as far as the wiring.. Have you double checked your wiring on the head unit? And did the speaker work before? If it didnt you probably just need to rerun new wires to that door.

Guys, my biggest thanks to all of you! I had to Gibb smack myself about the door.... big DUH on my end. A friend of mine is coming over later to help me chase the wiring gremlin. He knows a thousand times more about stereos than me, and has wired his own speakers/subs/etc in his and others vehicles. He said worst case scenario, he has some spare wire and we'll run new wire from the head unit. Thanks again everyone! I'll keep this updated.

Alright, door panels are off, locks still intact. I'm not looking forward to putting the panels back on though lol. Hopefully it's easier on than off.
Anyways, I think my XJ is some bastardized wiring love child of the Renix and Chrysler companies? I looked up the stereo for the 88-90 XJ (thanks btw freegdr, VERY helpful site!), the the positive is right...kinda. I have a green wire, which I has assumed was the positive wire. But then, on the 91-92 XJ, it is listing the negative as brown/red. Well, guess what? I have a brown/red wire, which I had assumed is ground. I guess this is why people hate the '97 XJ so much... the change years suck. I guess my '91 is similiar. I wish I had a multimeter.

My speaker wire was cut in the rubber boot from the door opening and shutting. I would pull off the rubber boot to check. The speaker wires end up on a connector by your left foot.

I'd be willing to bet its the speaker wire, the same exact thing happened to me with the speakers cutting in and out even with my new pioneers do I ended up running new wire. All I'm going to say is use really good quality wire, not the junk that comes in 100ft spools from Wally Mart. I highly recommend knukonceptz wire, the stuff is ridiculous compared to other wire, the insulation is twice as thick, you'll need to cut with 12gauge strippers if you get 14gauge, it is very durable and great for Cherokees since the new crappy wire is going to break just like the old crappy wire

For you fellas who do stereos for a living, I tip my hat to you. I swear I am about to yank EVERYTHING out of that rig and stomp on it, light it on fire, then proceed to urinate on the ashes. This is driving me nuts. Passenger side speaker works 100%, and I had confirmed all speakers function. Went back to the drivers side, pulled the boot, and found what I thought was the problem. The speaker ground wire that sits in the boot was split. Easy fix, right? Cut out just above the bad section and spliced in new wire. Got everything nice and tight, taped it for a little added durability, plug the speaker in, turn the key on, and...... NOTHING. The driver's side speaker still does not want to to work, and I cant seem to trace the wires from the boot up. The wires are very tight and offer no slack. This is driving me insane.
To help, here's what I checked:
Checked the new spliced wire was solid and has connection
Speakers work
Each wire is going to the right place (ground to ground, power to power)
As far as I know, it is NOT the headunit because the drivers side speaker would work, and the cause of the cutting in and out was either the loose clip or the splitting ground wire
I plan to check the back of the headunit today when the weather gets better. I need to calm down. Performance and repairs are my thing; stereo and audio for me is like a monkey doing rocket science.
