You have either a high idle or a cogged trans. oil screen/low press that retards the engaging.

Could be the torque converter lockup malfunctioning. Does the engine try to die when tou put in D and apply brakes? How much is the RPM drop from 1k rpms?

I merged your threads, and don't plan on charging you. In the future, please use the original thread throughout. Posting a new thread on the same topic, will just get you picked on a bit.

sorry i just figured out how to find my old threads thats why there was a repost. i checked the throttle cables and they seem fine the engine does not try to die when i engage my gears. like i said its the hard thud that scares me. there is no other problem while driving. granted this jeep sat for two years

Check the u joints of the drive shaft by turning the shaft with your hands with the jeep in N and hand brake.

You're looking for an inordinate amount of play in the u-joints. That could be causing your "thud" when you engage drive.

you are looking for a bad u joint. (do you know what that is?)

If one of the two u joints are worn, you will have play between the two yokes, and that may cause the thud.

The TPS has nothing to do with idle speed.
