Getting rusted neutral safety switch off
OK, so I need to pull my NSS off and clean the thing so that the Jeep will start reliably (especially in the winter with the remote starter!) Problem is the collar that goes on the transmission shaft is rusted to the shaft, well it's aluminum, so technically it's just oxidized to the shaft. I love how auto manufacturers use dissimilar metals in applications like this! Anyway, I've already broken off one of the four little fingers trying to get the thing off and I haven't gotten it to budge. I've tried to get a chisel between the body and the transmission, I've pried on the underside of the nut, I've tried tapping on it with a hammer to break the bond but nothing works. Even if I buy a new unit I still have to get this one off before I can install it! Any help would be appreciated.

Good penetrating oil like Kroil or S'Ok. Loosen the adjustment bolt and turn the NSS back and forth to free it from the shaft. Then pry carefully.

I used 2 small allen wrenches behind the sensor like mini pry bars using the leverage of the longer side to wiggle while the short side was able to pry straight off the shaft instead of bending or flexing the sensor.
Soak it first of course and try to scrap off as much of the rust first.
it will eventually start sliding off. if it gets stuck tap it back down and start again until it gets over the hump.

I put some liquid wrench on it last night when I quit fussign with it. My plan is to keep it lubed up for a week or two and see if that helps. I like the allen wrench idea. Keep the ideas coming!

Can't hurt to clean the end of the shaft off with a scotch-brite or fine sandpaper first either.

True. I wire brushed it last night. I'll have to take some sand paper to it also before I try pulling it off again. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of rust on the shaft itself though. It seems more like the bonding of the aluminum to the steel over the last 12 years.

OK. How are you thinking I would use it? I'm picturing putting it behind the transmission and trying to lever the switch off. Is that what you're thinking or am I missing some other creative method? I've basically been trying to do that with a small pry bar.

Well, I got it off. It's in probably a dozen pieces now though. Ended up prying/breaking the housing off the shaft. Then I was able to use a chisel to split the aluminum "bushing" and get it off. Now I have to find another switch, lol. I cracked the plastic part on the one I pulled at the JY when I removed it.

This thing was soaking for a couple weeks now, lol. I ordered a used one off eBay for $25, so I'll have a whopping $35 total into the switch (JY unit cost $10, but is only good for parts now) plus a lot of head banging and frustration.
