D60's might be a bit overkill but a well built D44/9inch should hold up just fine. I got mine for $450. Add gears, shafts, brackets, ect and youve got a good setup for around $1500. IMHO since youre stepping up from 33's, get some 35's and run em for a while to see how you like them because 35's drastically change your wheeling style and it takes some getting used to. i couldnt imagine the gap between 33's and 37's.

I've heard to many problems with people trying to run 37's or bigger on a D44. Everyone I've talked to about it say they wish they would have just bought a D60 and been done with it. To me a D30 can hold a 33, a D44 can hold a 36, and anything bigger you need a D60. However there are exceptions to the rule just depending on how you wheel.

Sounds like the plan for my Jeep. I've got the D30 / D44 combo as well. Plans are to run 33's, 4.56 gears, and lockright lockers. Figure that will satistfy me for a while till I start building a big 1-ton rig.

What he was trying to say is that a 4.0 from an XJ is an I6 not a V6. A V6 has the 3 cylinders side by side. A I6 has 6 cylinders in a line. There are some v6 4.0's out there like the ones found in the Ford Ranger or the new Nissain Fronteirs. However, they are not like your jeep 4.0's.

As for the D44's needing a regear, it all depends. If I recall correctly D44's from wagonners run 2.72 gears. This is to high for our jeeps. So you will need to simple calulate the proper gears to run with your tire combo. If your consirned about needing to regear cuase of the extra wieght of the axle. The anwser is no, but on a general rule of thumb most offroaders go a little lower than the gear called for. For example a XJ w/ a 4.0 on 33's calls for 4.34 gears. They don't make those gears for our axles so most regear to 4.56 for the additional power vs the 4.10 ratio.

A stick you want the lower gears becuase you want to make up for the lack of a torque converter.

a Dana 44 might survive 37 for a while but the 30 will be junk and you will be replacing parts every time you go wheeling check out the build section for great white by Micheal maxim he has a d44 front and rear with some 36 it looks bad *** and can go just about any where. don't throw your money away
