There was a difference in that some XJs had the TCU built in with the ECU and then some years had them seperated. HTH

But that is in the electronics of the jeep itself and not in the tranny.

the physical tranny...as far as I know only had spline differences for the years I specified.

A 1998 tranny should bolt up fine in a 1992 jeep. I don't know of any reason why it wont.

I have a 1995 tranny in my 1990 jeep. It changed the spline count from 21 to 23 which helped me.

The physical trans has changed little if any but he was asking about the electronics for it which is partly the TCU and thats about it until they changed the speedo signal being generated and the older ones being transmitted through a conventional cable.
I have heard that the newer trannys have servo's that are not as strong as the ones on the older trannys but can't confirm that.
