Awesome. Before I start wrenching I want to rebuild the axle, transmission, add a SYE and u-joints for drive shaft. Can I use the stock rear drive shaft when I add a SYE?

I know he figured it out but i thought i'd post this to help others who don't have an identification tag on it, like mine. Put a tire/wheel on the axle and turn the tire one full revolution. While you do this count many times the yoke spins (or driveshaft if it's on your jeep). If it does 3 and 1/2 revolutions to one full tire revolution, that's 3.55. If it does just a tad bit over 3 revolutions, that's 3.07. If it does 4 revolutions, 4.10.

I haven't kept up with your threads all that much.

Here is a word of advice. If your asking how to ID gear ratio and asking about doing an SYE while using a stock slip yoke driveshaft. You "may" want to do some more reading before attempting the feat you mention above.

I have been wrenching for about 20 years now and don't know everything. Especially how to rebuild a AW4 tranny.

So research your project very well before you start. Otherwise you may end up with pieces and parts laying everywhere and a project without end.

Trannys and t-cases are not easily taken apart nor put back together. And even after 20 years, I did take apart an aw4 while watching springs and such end up across the room to be lost forever. T-case is a little more forgiving but still a chore in and of itself.

Lastly...if you do an SYE, you will not be able to use your stock slip yoke style driveshaft. You will need a front shaft from an XJ to be used in the rear after the SYE is installed.

Oh one more thing. Axle building had an art to it. You need gauges, time, patiences, and some semi-special tools. You might wanna get a book on that one before attempting.

i was going to rebuild the tranny myself. I was going to take it in and get rebuilt. Ya right. I have rebuild tranmissions before but I hear this one is a pain. so I will leave it up to a tranmission specialist. also what I ment by rebuilding the axles is check and replace the oil, replace the ball joints and the upper control arm bushings. Sorry for not being specific enough. lol

Just another 2 cents worth.

AW4 trannys are dirt cheap around me. 50-75 bucks gets you one from anyone parting out a jeep XJ. Bolt in and run for however long it lasts. I had 225k on mine and only replaced it to go from 21spline to 23 spline.

My local trans shop/buddy said he has never ever seen one come in for rebuild. Doesn't mean they don't...just that AW4 trannys are very durable and super cheap to replace if you happen to sink one in the mud for hours.

I'm just worried I might get a bad transmission or its slipping. But it comes with a 6 month warranty for $400.00. Is that a good deal?

Yes, for a used aw4, i say it is. Stick it in, drive it for a couple months and make sure it works and works well. If not, take it back and bitc$ to them

Me personally, I would shop around a bit.

Like I said...Around me...Trannys are pulled from XJs that are being scrapped everyday.

I had 2 of them I couldn't give away. I had them up for $50 just to get them out of my shop. Ended up taking them to scrap.

Trannys run about 75-150 around me. Those have between 75-150k miles on them.

I'm getting close again to throwing out some 21 spline stuff if it doesn't sell. AW4 21 spline I think is still sitting on the shelf and I know I have a 242 fresh rebuild with 2k miles on it sitting on the shelf. Paid $450 for it and can't get anyone to take it for $300 cause its 21 spline instead of 23sp.

1992-2001

I had heard about some electrical differences but nothing posted as proof.

As far as I know...The AW4 tranny only had one change. 21 spline output 1991 and prior. 23 spline output 1992 through 200?
