Default Gear ratio?

The guy I bought my jeep from grenaded the rear end and replaced it with different gears. I have Dana 35 rear and 30 front can anyone tell me what the stock gear ration for the rear dif is?

Do you only have a 2 wd? if you have a 4wd and you have two different gear ratios and you put it in 4, things will go horribly wrong. Stock you prob have 3.55's. But post year, tranny and engine size.

I would guess it is most likely 3.55 but could have been 3.73.

It's a 4wd 98 I'm not real sure if that makes a difference. And in four wheel drive it just slowly drags my rear tires so the fronts have a higher gear ratio correct?

If they where changed the only true way to be sure is to count teeth on the ring and pinion. devide the number ring gear teeth by the pinion teeth and you get the ratio. you could try the spinning the tire trick but its not 100%. the diff's should have tags that say what the ratio is (was originaly)

the spinning the tire trick works as long as u have a good eye and spin it slow so u can keep track of how many times the yoke spins

I agree, but wouldn't order a ring and pinion gear set based on this, I would want to know for sure and count them. The cover isn't hard to pop off when spending money. But it should let you know if they match or not.

Vehicles with the tow package will probably have 3.73. If you're dragging the rear end, the rear probably has a higher gear ratio (meaning it turns slower at the same driveshaft rpm).

the gear ratio is (say for a 3.73) 3.73 revolutions of the driveshaft per revolution of the axle. so if you have a 3.55 up front, the front tires are turning faster than the rears, and dragging the rears along to make up for the fact that the rears are turning slower

Or you pull the cover spin the ring gear till the numbers on the side of it come up and read the gear ratio. Could be 3.07, 3.55, 3.73, 4.11 depending on the year, motor and trans the donor jeep was.

Since it's stated that the XJ has a Dana 30 and a Dana 35, one would know its 4wd...since 2wd had a tube in the front...

3.55.

We still need to know what transmission is in it...auto and 4.0L should be 3.55, 5 sp and 4.0L should be 3.07, 2.5L and anything is likely 4.10.

3.55.
Haha.. Yes, this is true.. In all honesty when I first read post (it was late and I had been, umm, partying, yeah, no wait, just a mellow social gathering, that's what I meant..) either way, I thought the post said the rear had be regeared.. So my first post was centered around thinking the rear had different than stick gearing... Idk...
Mistook grenaded for regeared... Haha

It definitely could be...

The 2.5L was put in every single year minus 2001.
