ok im new i got a 91 cherokee i dont call it a xj because i think the xj is the 4wd imo but its got the 4.0 ho auto tranny and i dont know what real axle my dad has owned it 16 years now and it was 307,000 miles nothing has ever gone wrong with it is standard stuff but the tranny pan drips really bad about a bottle of fluid a week i know you never change the filter with this many miles but what about just droping the pan and replacing the gasket and leaving the old filter same with the rear end lube its never been changed and is a kinda milky should i change it thank you for the help

see if you can get a silicone tranny pan gasket and you can replace the filter just use the old fluid

well the way i think about it the fluid isnt dirty because i am constantly pouring it in so new fluid shouldnt hurt right? and thanks for the quick reply i knew joining would be a good idea

yes change it thats water in with the gear oil just use blue permatex on the cover

in the rear aslong as it not limited slip rear then u have to use limited slip gear oil

this is what yours most lklely looks like its called open rear just use reg gear oil

You can change the filter, you are just suppose to use the old fluid.

However, since you've been constantly adding new fluid I'd think yours is pretty clean and fresh, and therefore should be safe to replace.

But I'm not a trans guru, so maybe look into that a bit more.
