Can you verify that the new sensor works? Sometimes the newer sensors are bad out of the box. I didn't have the idiot light cluster in mine for long before I switched to a full gauge set, but I am not sure mine lit up on startup either. Make sure to confirm that it is supposed to light up. Hopefully someone on here can verify that for 100% certainty.
If it is supposed to light up and doesn't, there may be something wrong with the cluster.

It is still worthwhile being sure that the sensor works however the bulb should illuminate on ignition.
So, according to the manual for my 92, the procedure for checking the light is as follows.
1. Turn ignition switch to run
2. Touch coolant temp indicator connector terminal s to ground. Lamp lights. If ok, replace switch. If bulb is ok, repair open to instrument cluster connector terminal A1.
My understanding is that if you ground the connector, the light should light. If it doesn't, you may have a break in the wire somewhere or a bad bulb.
Okay I switched bulbs between coolant light and oil light and oil light was still the only one to work. Also some of the bulbs have a blue film over them, anybody know why this is?
i guess it’s time to find a full gauge cluster to swap in
were did you buy the new sender from and how did you get the new one in? ive been trying to do this but putting the new one in is kicking my butt.

I got the part from rockauto, about $13, installed it with a 1/2 open ended wrench I believe. The new sender you need will depend on your gauge cluster.
Anyone else have some more advice to get my gauge light working?
Are you all sure the light is supposed to come on upon start up? I mean that would make sense, but today it came on while running but still doesn’t come on upon start up with the oil light.
