Quote: I love it when simple changes take way more effort then they should.

I picked up a crows foot wrench to make removing the water temp sender a little easier. Turns out with the angle the bolt is at, and being pressed up against the valve cover so closely I still couldn't get a great angle on it. Socket will not fit over the top, and I'm running short on ideas to get it out short of removing the valve cover. At this point the unit is stripped on one side.

At this point should I pull the valve cover, or does anyone have another idea on a good tool/way to remove it without taking off the valve cover first?
First thing I'd do is spray the crap out of it with PB Blaster or some other penetrating oil a few times and let it soak for a few hours. Then I'd get a pair of vise grips and latch them onto the old sending unit. Once you get the bolt to move just a bit, it will take less effort. Just keep working it out bit by bit and you should get the unit off without major effort.

I'm really surprised that you are getting hung up on this.

If you just plug the new one in without changing the sending units, everything will work but oil pressure and water temp. The gas gauge, speedo, tach, and battery voltage will all work. When you change the sending units for the oil pressure and water temp, they will work too.

This thread is gold!
So I’m starting with a street driven only, garaged most of its life completely stock and basic model 1996 Cherokee. No power anything, no roof rack, and worst of all, idiot lights for oil pressure and coolant temp.
I picked up a new cluster and the details in this thread made the difference when I finally found a parts counter guy who understood the subtlety of gauge sending units but with only one electrical connection.
For anyone who may need this, here’s the part numbers that worked for me.
“Standard T Series” is the brand on the box.

for the oil sender, PS257
for the temp sender, TS334T

Thanks for this resource. I’m
