I believe that the float in my gas tank is broke or defective. My reasoning for this is because when i turn to the right (i believe this is right) my gas tank goes down, but then turn the opposite direction it goes back up to where it should be. Question is, is there a way to fix this, or does this require me to replace the entire gas tank?

Step One:
Do a VIN search to see if there's an open recall notice for your XJ. Had one for my 97 and the dealer fixed it for free.

The fix may be as simple as pulling the pump and cleaning the fuel level sensor contacts.
