gas gauge stops working sometimes

gas gauge stops working sometimes
Like the title says...for my 99 xj every once in a while when I start it up it will drop to nothing....when it does,it still runs fine (doesn't feel like it will stall out)and i know i have plenty of gas in the tank...was wondering if its the start of s fuel pump going bad or a connection issue
