Default Gas gauge random stopped working

Any idea on what it would be. Truck ran fine one minute. A few hours later went to start it and it was giving me trouble starting and the gas guage is no longer working after that

Trouble starting how? My gas gauge fails sometimes when I'm below half a tank. But I'm thinking its because my check valve is bad. Try this if it keeps going, cycle your key a few times then try starting.

Something in my head is screaming CPS.

I think one of the signs of a bad CPS is your gas gauge just randomly dropping to 'e'.

Research it. I'm going to bed.

Bad ground. Check the left rear cargo area ground.

1) check fuel
2) Do you hear your fuel pump prime when you turn the key to on?
3) Do you have any fuel pressure at the rail?

The intermittent character is very suggestive for an electrical cause of the trouble...

97+ the fuel gauge sending unit is directly connected to the PCM, besides fuel gauge control is used by the PCM to control the evap system and other engine functions.

97+ a faulty fuel gauge sending unit or wiring can potentially cause driveablitiy & starting problems.

Symptoms are usually intermittent, the fuel ga. may behave ok for a while then get worse, then work ok again for a while, as time progresses may eventually begin to cause driveability and starting problems.

Previous years may be different where the PCM is not using fuel level data. I think the fuel gauge may be directly controlled by the fuel ga. sending unit. I don't have any wiring schematics for earlier years.

For all years I would inspect the fuel pump relay and wiring.

97+ 12 volts power and ground is fed to the fuel pump and fuel gauge sending unit along with two additional PCM signal wires.
