I checked a few other threads but no one posted if the result worked.
Specs. 88 XJ I6 4.0 stock fuel system
-Problem: Gas gauge reads past full.
I've heard its a common problem with the older jeeps.
this problem occurred awhile ago but would eventually go away and randomly come back. no its always like this. I read that its most likely a ground. But it was never confirmed.
If you have had this problem, or know how it can be fixed let me know.
thank you

ok, in that case, i would pull the fuel pump, cause there is a little lever with a floatie thing on it in the tank...sounds like it is getting stuck or not floating right. pull it, check it and fix if necessary. also check all the connections to your fuel pump.

I have the same problem with mine. It will go past the full mark so now I just pump more fuel in it when it gets to a 1/4 of a tank. Please let us know if tou find the fix. It will be greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem with my 96. I replaced the fuel gauge and it didn't fix the issue. I've narrowed down all the problems to one; It's the sending unit/fuel float. You have to replace the fuel pump and float assembly to fix it. You can take it out without dropping the tank, it's facing the rear axle on the fuel tank near the top.

Crap... I'm reading this and getting worried. Here's my situation though... my gauge was working fine... I pulled the instrument cluster because the tripometer wasn't working (still doesn't- tries to spin in opposite direction of odometer) so I took it off and just tightened up all the screws on the back (it's the printed-circuit type of board) I re-installed the cluster and now the fuel gauge stays pegged all the way past the "F"

I've pulled my cluster a couple times to fix things. If it just started happening after you put the cluster back in, it could have a short somewhere. Go out and buy a cluster from a pick n pull, they only cost $15 where I go.
