***Just a note for anyone reading this thread***

Keep in mind that if your rear is sagging or sitting lower than the the front to rear height relation it came with - your guage will read not completely full when you fill it and will show you as being empty when you still have a few gallons left... I believe the fuel light is supposed to come on when there is between 2-3 gallons left... my rear sags so it comes on when there's about 5 left.

Gentlemen...

My gauge just went beyond full in the cluster, and the overhead console DTE counter reads 547 KM constantly now, I know that there is about 3/4 of a tank of fuel in there right now. I've been having issues with the pressure after sitting for a while aswell...if sitting for a few hours or more, I need to prime the system a few times before start.

From reading this thread, is it safe to assume that the sender is on its way out, or is there another possible issue here??

I would venture to say your sender for sure, and pump is on its way too. Because your pump has a check ball inside to hold pressure after its turned off. If it's losing pressure then that ball has broken up or gotten stuck.

Ok so i need to know what wires to switch in my 92 cherokee. It reads at empty and empty at full. I have read all post for this thread so i know its wro.g year of sending unit just not aure where at and what wires to swap. Also its rpm guage never worked sence i bought it or temp guage. The temp jumps to its far right then goes back to 0 on the left when u start it tho. And now my odometer and speedometer stopped working i replaced the part on the tcase and the gear inside looks good but they still dont work. My volts oil and the backwards gas guage all still work tho. I asume that the temp guage works vut needs new thermostat befor it will give a readout tho as this was the fix for my 93 s10. But the weird thing is that my odometer and speedometer workd wednesday when i drove home from work thursday i put fluid in my tcase and took for a drive and they didnt work any more. Thats why i just thought it aas the sensore on the tcase. I checked grounds but didnt clean them looked ok. Pulled guages everything looked clean ill repull them and clean contacks one the board to see if that helps if not jy time. If that dont work not realy sure whats next

Honestly man, for that amount of guage failure - it may be worth it for you to pull one out of a junk yard... I bought a cluster with all working guages for mine for 20 bucks

Default Gas gauge aftermarket sendor does not work right

I have a 1991 Cherokee Limited and recently had to replace the fuel pump (died right out of the blue while driving). Took it to a reputable shop and they installed an Airtex aftermarket pump/sender unit combo. I noticed 2 days later when I filled the tank, it didn't quite read full. Take a long road trip, I know I can get about 340 miles on a tank, but at 100 miles the gas gauge reads 1/2. The low fuel light comes on when there is about 7 gallons in the tank instead of about 2 like it used to. Bad sender right?? Check this out, this pump has now been replaced (free of charge) 5 times. Some of them the gas gauge appeared to operate correctly, but they shorted out and only lasted a couple of days before failing. Now I finally have a pump that works and seems reliable (from CarQuest no less and installed by the Jeep dealer) but I still have exactly the same problem with the fuel gauge reading about 1/2 of what it should. Anybody got any ideas or had the same experience????? I know the sender is supposed to send 0 resistance to ground to read full, and 100 ohms to read empty.

I would first start off by checking your grounds - it sounds like you may have a weak chassis ground. Check the ground from the sender to the chassis and from the battery to the ground points. If there's any corrosion, clean it up... always start from the cheapest place to fix first - which in this case would be free.

The wires for the gas lever sender are tan and ground is black. There is a conveniently located connector about a foot forward of the gas tank. Good luck

I'm having a problem sort of similar to this, but can't seem to find something like it. I replaced my fuel pump and filter and everything was working wonderfully for about two weeks, and today, randomly, my gas gauge dropped to zero and is staying there not matter how full or empty i get. Ground?

Disconnect the pigtail to the gas tank. It is about 2ft from the tank. With key in on, short the ground side. The gauge should read full. If not you have a wiring issue or failed gauge. If it does read full then the sender on the pump is bad. Hope that helps. Still no solution to my problem of gauge reading about half what it should. :-(

I've made a post of this same issue early morning today. It was the same thing. Fuel pump died while coming home. Called a tow truck and arrived at home. It had 1/4 tank of fuel. Once the pump was replaced, proceeded to start the engine and when it was cranking, fuel gauge went to empty mark and low fuel light turned on. I checked the wire harness, the fuel level itself and still the same stuff. I don't think this could be a ground issue because the fuel pump will have some function problem too and it's running quite fine. I put 5 gallons of fuel after the tests and with the volume on the tank before pump died, It have a little bit more of 1/2 fuel tank and the gauge still on empty mark but low fuel light is off, but when I took off the assy from the tank and move the float arm by hand or even put the assy on a recipient with fuel, the gauge marks quite fine. What the heck is happening???

Please, someone give me an idea or explanation about this.

That almost sounds like there is a hole in the float at the end of the arm - moves up and down fine by hand, but probably filling up with gasoline once it is submerged and then doesn't move at all.... just sinks.

Never got that problem solved, so I had to replace it. Float wasn't punctured, the problem was on the float arm coil. I didn't lose any more time on that and I had to order the part.
