Exclamation Gas Gauge Problem ???

Well, a few weeks after i bought my jeep my father decided he wanted one as well. He asked me to post a question on the forum about his gas gauge. I have yet to see it first hand but as he describes it, "The gauge shows a little gas but never moves, wonder what could be the cause?" Any insight into the problem and why it would stop working would be great. Thanks.

sounds to me like the sending unit on the fuel pump assembly (tells the gauge how much gas you have) is stuck or failed. It's an arm with a float that moves up and down depending on how much gas is in the tank. The arm is thin metal and feels kinda fragile where it attaches/pivots, they warn you about damaging/bending it while installing a new one in the Haynes manual instructions I think. Pretty sure on 97/98 and newer you have to drop the tank to replace, 96/97 and older it's on the front of the tank and there's no need to drop the tank.

If it's 96 or older it's a 15 min job to take it out and clean it. Many times the sensor on the sending unit gets dirty and it just needs to be cleaned. Do a search or go back through yesterday's posts, I wrote up an explanation for someone else on how to do this. And there's also some technical write ups with pics. If it's 97+, like the other guy said, you have to drop the tank.
