When I filled up my tank a while ago, the gas gauge read empty with the light on, and the next day the gauge read only 1/4 of a tank. I tested the gauge and grounds, and they were good.
I took the fuel assembly out and hooked the wires back together and moved the lever, and it worked. I didn't fully clean the terminals ( that metal stuff that resists current) yet, but I did move the lever a bunch and wiped the terminals. Is there something else wrong, or did I fix it? Did it fix itself, and start reading correctly when the gas got low? I did notice that it seemed there was liquid inside the float, but it still floated in water.

Also, based on the photo, how many feet are missing? Are they necessary to put back on, or can I leave it in the tank? Also, how will I get it out? Can I use kitchen tongs, or will they cause an explosion because they are metal?
