Default gas gauge malfunctions?

alright so this started happening the other night and has progressively gotten worse. when I start my jeep the gas light will almost always come on then the needle goes to a 1/8 or 1/4. if i pull over and stop, turn it off then turn it back on it will almost always either jump straight back to the correct level or slowly go back to it. I know its not the end of the world but i dont want it to be a precursor to something bigger, and its really kinda annoying especially when you keep think "omg i cant be out of gas AGAIN" lmao that should be in the you know you drive an xj when thread. anyways can someone point me in the right direction here. thanks in advance.

same thing happens to mine. it the sending unit on the fuel pump assembly (fuel level sending unit?). from what ive been told the only way to fix it is to replace the whole assembly.

Ok so it's just the unit that runs the gas gauge or something that signals the fuel pump? Cuz I dont need any furl delivery problems out the blue

its on the actual pump assembly in the tank. all it is, is a sensor that gets corroded by the gas and starts going bad. the float tells the sensor the level and the sensor tells the gauge. dosnt affect the fuel delevery.

mine was like that when i bought it 2 years ago. not sure how long it was like that before. the dealer tried changing the gauges, but the problems not in the gauges, its in the pump assembly. i just recently started having problems with the pump not wanting to keep pressure in the line, so now i have to prime it a few times before starting the jeep up. im pretty sure the pump going out isnt related to the sensor, just maintainace.

but it was fine since ivehad it, just give me the wrong level reading. mine was actually so bad it would jump from E to F to E and back and fourth or just sit on E.

hope this helps.

There was a thread like this a few weeks ago, seems to be a pretty common problem (especially on 98's). My 98 does the same thing (the 4 months I've owned it atleast), kind of annoying but don't wanna spend the money to fix it till it becomes an actual problem lol.

yea i didnt even bother to replace mine. $200 for the pump assembly or guess how much gas you have. id rather save 200 and guess. not like its ganna cause any problems. the only time mine was inacurate was when it got below 1/4 tank. ut now since my pumps going out anyway, ill just kill 2 bird with one stone.
