so my mini fuse #16 blows under the hood. I have a 98 cherokee xj. Put a new one in lasted 3 days, put another one in lasted 1 day, now I tried one more and it blows right away.

I disconnected my dome lights in the front and back, disconnected the radio and also the drivers side door controls. I was planning on disconnecting the passenger side as well but it looks like the door bundle connects to the fuse panel inside and its kinda a pita to get to.

Anyway any ideas on how I can solve this issue. I think theres a few other things that i need to disconnect that are on the same circuit. What should i look at first any advice?

Chafed wire.

 

Don't unplug everything at once... Check for shorts in every system running off that fuse.

I dont have an under hood light and I figured to unplug everything to see if the problem goes away n then plug stuff back in one at a time.

 

I hate messing with electrical stuff because i dont know much about it and I know its gona take me forever to solve this.

unplug them one at a time. Check for continuity on each one, repeat. If you don't find it that way it's an intermittent problem which can be harder to trace. If you don't have a good multimeter pick up a test light.

 

Here's circuits on the IOD fuse:

* Under hood Lamp
* TCM
** Radio
** Instrument Cluster
** Glove Box Lamp Switch
** LT & RT Courtesy Lamps

* These circuits go through two splices, One in the engine bay in the large harness against the firewall, above the rocker cover. Inspect the loom for penetration down to the wiring within. If okay, wiggle the harness around to see if it makes a difference.

The other is behind the dash/behind the glove box.

** Theses circuits also go through the Junction Block (JB). If it's ate up with corrosion it may be the problem. JB Connector C4 (the large connector held in with a bolt) often corrodes.

You can remove the connector from the TCM and see if that works, but leave the instrument cluster to last - it is a major player in the CCD Bus.

 

hmm well instrument cluster was messing up before to where i have to hit it from under the steering column every now and then to get the gauges to work. So that might have something to do with it.

So where is the TCM located? on the passenger side under the glove box or in that area? What sucks is its freezing outside so I cant even do anything until it gets warm again.

Your TCM is located under the dash on the driver's side, to the right of the steering column. Remove the trim panel and knee blocker from under the steering column, then look up and to the right of the column. It will be a small silver/grey box, held on with two fasteners.

 

I have a tool in my box I have used a few times. It's called a Fuse Buddy Tester. It runs about $17.00 and would help with a problem like yours.
Mine is 20 amp but I think they also have one that is 30 amp is well.

Thats interesting might have to get one, first I have to wait till it warms up so I can actually start messing around with it.

 

I have only used it one time but I have had a few friends come over to borrow it! It cab be a very helpful.
