Default full time ...part time

Hey guys I just bought a 98 XJ, I'm loving it but I have a question. When I put it in 4 high, the part time light comes on , when I put it in 4 low, it still shows part time. I can tell that the Jeep is in 4 low , but why doesn't the full time light switch on?

4-hi and 4-lo are both part-time.

Just different gear ratios.

The full time is for the 242 transfer case. On your 4 wd lever gate, is there a 2 HI, 4 hi, N, 4 Lo? That is a 231 Transfer case.

If your shift gate goes 2wd, 4 Part time, 4 Full time, N, 4Lo then you have a 242 Transfer case.

I am assuming that the part time light is on because you have a 231 Transfer case. The part time means just that. You can not use it all of the time. IE, dry pavement. Dry pavement is the best example.
