Default Fuel pump. Typical lifespan? Replace it before it dies?

In many cars, this is one of the few parts that can leave you stranded.
I would like to just replace it at my convenience.
Is this a difficult part to replace?

My XJ now has over 150k miles on the original fuel pump.
Do many of you guys consider it a preventative maintenance item?
Just replace it?

There's got to be a maintenance schedule on this thing. I would like to know as well.
Thankfully Jeep engineers put it safely tucked away in the gas tank for easy replacement

They are designed to last the life of the car. That's not to say they don't need replaced occasionally, but I would not fix it if it's not broken. For '96 owners, it's not a bad idea to have one on the shelf though.

I don't think about replacing a fuel pump until I hear odd noises from it. Even then, they usually run thousands of miles after the humming starts. I've never been stranded by a fuel pump by using this approach. I listen to the fuel pump prime every time I start the XJ.

I had one in a '83 T-Bird that would heat up and shut off until it cooled off again, but that one had been making noise for a LONG time. I was young, broke, and was "limping" it along even though it was external to the tank and easy to change out.

I had to replace the original on my 97 about a year ago and the pickup screen/filter was just about clogged up completely. So I would say yours could be close to being due soon. Cheaper than a tow if you are doing any long distance driving.

Change it out with an airtex......

Oh and I replaced my original fuel pump assembly at 73k original miles which was last year. Was driving down the highway trying to pass a lady in a minivan... Laid the hammer down and got a few nice big pops out of the tailpipe and she died. That was a nice $280 tow home. Between the gas gauge bouncing around and having to poor man prime it, I guess those are good signs the pump is dying.

THis....

and don't forget to bomb-proof your HCV valve, get a FRAM oil filter, E3 Spark Plugs, and a Bosch O2 sensor while you're at it
