Fuel pump swap?

Fuel pump swap?
Is it possible to swap a 97+ Cherokee's fuel pump with a -96 fuel pump? By doing so I would be eliminating the on pump filters and gaining an inline filter. My wife's pump is bad so it will be replaced regardless just thought that would make my life easier if all i had to do to change the filter was loosen two nuts...
