Default Fuel pump, or something else?

So, yesterday my cherokee randomly started stalling out on me. I have the 5 speed manual. I would be driving and it would jerk real bad when I hit the gas pedal. I noticed that the guages all dropped and went to 0 as if the truck stalled out on me but when I would hit the gas it would "bump start" it. It did this periodically for about 20 miles and then it got worse.

When it got worse I would pull up to a stop light and it would stall unless I held the gas in while at the stop. It stalled a few times but started up when I would turn the ignition. This worked a few times. Needless to say, it got worse.

Now, it won't start, it will just keep turning over and over. Occasionally I can get it to start if I hold the gas to the floor while trying to start it. Sometimes it'll sit and idle for a few minutes then die and sometimes it immediately dies when I let off the gas.

I'm assuming this is the fuel pump. I can't hear it whirring when I turn on the accessory but I'm not sure if you could ever hear it or not. I didn't pay attention to it before this happened so I'm not sure if the pump is just quiet or if it's not working.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. My car is stuck in the good right now and id like to get it out of the ghetto asap. Lol

Thanks!

nobody can tell you. you need to go there with test equipment and figure it out.

figure a way too plumb a gauge in. go from there. personally ide sign up for triple a and get it towed home before wrenching on something in the zoo.

What do you mean? Are you saying I need to get an oil pressure gauge and hook it up to the oil pump and see how much pressure the pump is producing?

no you need to test for fuel pressure.

there's most likely a test port somewhere. im unfamiliar with the 4.0s. if you check a manual it'll tell you where and what expect for pressure

I just assumed you guys might know exactly what the problem is based off of the description I gave you. To me, all signs point to the fuel pump but I'm not an expert by any means.

I've been searching the forums for information and it seems as though it could be one of a million things. In my mind all signs point to the fuel pump.

Not sure if this bit of information is helpful but it all started after I went four wheeling yesterday. I got stuck and had to rock it back and forth steady for a good 10 minutes to get unstuck.

That's the only thing that makes me think it could be something other than the fuel pump, because I wouldn't think bouncing around while rocking it to get unstuck would affect the fuel pump. I could be wrong though.

First off, you have to get a fuel pressure guage to see if it is the fuel pump. Why spend money you don't have to.

This gauge is sold at autozone. Buy it and check your fuel pressure.

This is where you check it.

Just to add a little bit more information. About 8 hours after I got stranded I went back to the Jeep and it started right up. So I'm assuming that once it gets cold it will fire right back up every time. I also assume that that means that it's not the fuel pump. What do you guys think?

Vapor lock. The fuel got hot and vaporized before it was supposed to. Still should check fuel pressure.

Naw, it's Maytag. My momma wanted a washing machine when I was born, but all she got was an agitator.
