what year is it? 96 and older you dont have to drop the gas tank. 97 up you gotta drop the tank. if its the newer one, be patient with the retainer ring that holds the pump on when your installing it. mine was a PITA and i was getting frustrated. stay calm, youll win eventually lol

Always post year/engine. Significant differences through the years.
If yours is a 97 or newer, here is a link you'll be interested to read.

And clean out all the sediment, and crap in the bottom. That way your newly installed fuel pump doesn't clog up the screen, and make loud buzzing noises, and fail shortly after you finish.

I'm going to thread jack a bit....
What's a decent fuel pump assembly, as in brand and vendor to buy from. I see them from $100 shipped on amazon for a TKO, a Spectra on Rockauto for $126 plus shipping, and they go up from there. I looked into the link above and they mention someone named Mike on Ebay who sells just the pump, for like $90... but I'm in need of a level sending unit too and his sells for $195.
My pump still works, but the vehicle has over 200K miles on it and since my level sending unit is bad I'm thinking I should replace the whole thing. To spend another $200 is not in my budget. I've got well over $3000 into this Jeep and I can't even make it run yet. Every time I turn around it's something else...
Bottom line, whats the best deal anyone has found for a new fuel pump assembly?

The best "deal" is not the lowest price. Unless you enjoy doing things twice.
The fuel pump is one of those things that you should NOT shop for with price as the primary reason for purchasing. I know you are on a budget, but you should resist the urge to buy the lowest price assembly you can find. There is a LOT of difference in quality on fuel pumps. A lot.......
I always search out BOSCH as they make tremendous fuel pumps. Well worth the money and the lifespan is similar to what factory OEM pumps will see. I have had terrible luck with Airtex and so have countless other XJ owners. You may see them as the low price point in many parts stores. Stay away from them.
Be VERY wary of the cheap charlie no name pumps available on ebay. Again, the prices can look attractive, but a lot of it is absolute junk; some of it doesn't even work out of the box. And if it does work, the longevity is very poor. I buy plenty from ebay, but only buy automotive when the name brand is confirmed.

Starting up this thread again... I had the problem of the jeep sputtering and dying on the let turns, I also have weak fuel pressure at the rail. Is the link above, just replace the pump and filter and not the whole assemble correct? Im wondering if it is worth replacing the pump and filter on my 98 sport, or buy a whole new assembly, My gause gauge is off about 1/8th of a tank, which isnt a big deal. ANy help be appreciated

Yes, you can piece meal parts replacement, but I generally recommend replacing the ENTIRE assembly as long as you're going in. If one component is failing and has a lot of time and miles on it, others are not far behind.....
I posted this link mainly to outline the procedure of removing and reinstalling the pump assembly.

This probably led to your original pump's failure.
