Fuel pump going bad question... ?
1992 XJ.. Bosch fuel pump replaced 100K ago.. Replaced gas tank last fall and cleaned the "sock" on the pickup too..
Filled up today coming home from the week vacation and the fuel pump started getting LOUD at a rest stop. Jeep started running VERY bad. Pump sounded like it was cavitating and the engine started stalling and running like crap.
Also managed to use 11 gallons of gas in 80 miles or so..
Left XJ running while I filled the tank again and it immediately started running better and not "hunting" at idle anymore.. Fuel pump stopped making the strange sound...
Another 150 miles home and I have about 1/2 tank and no more noisy pump..
Jeeps running normal now too.
Bad gas maybe?? Or pump going bad?
Ideas?

Sounds like my jeep lol
Just a thought, but when was the last time you changed your fuel filter. One time my jeep started stalling and ran like crap and it needed a fuel filter change.

Possibly an easy fix.
The pump is not hard to take out.
The hose Bosch uses on the pump is a cheap hose that dissolves in fuel - turns mushy.
Replace the short hose with QUALITY fuel hose.

Ya, Ill drain the tank this weekend and pull it again and see what the heck is goin' on in there. At least I painted the new tank, anti-seized ALL of the hangers and greased up the pump gasket and rings last fall. Should be a breeze to remove and re-install.
