Fuel pump change
How hard is it to change a fuel pump on a 90 cherokee laredo 4.0. Not 100% its the fuel pump. Changed the map sensor, plugs, wires, cap, rotor. Starts up but doesnt idle.

If it is the fuel pump. Why does it run one week then not start at all. Then let it set for a week or two. Then it runs for awhile. Then it wont start.....? Would a fuel pump work then not...then work again

Fuel pump
I just spent the last 4 weeks going through the same thing. It will start and run ok and you can drive it on short trips but drive it more than about 70 miles and will die on me. I could drive it on a short trip and go to start it later and no go. I could start it and 15 minutes later would not run. Let it sit over night and fire right up. I changed every thing but the pump and no deal. I finally got stranded away from home and had to tow it to Jeep dealer. They originally blamed the ignition and replace everything in that group. Then it stranded them after they thought it was fixed. The fuel pump would quit after about 45 minutes of running. They replaced the pump and I have put about 250 miles on it and runs great. However the repair cost as much as some of the Cherokees on this blog.

thats too bad about all the repair costs! The fuel pump is super easy to replace, dont even have to drop the tank! Just thought I would share my experience with the fuel pump. a fuel pressure test showed it to be pretty low, I could drive fine as long as I didnt need any power (hard accelerate, up hill, etc..) but would bulk at the worse times (like trying to merge onto a highway with nearly no acel. lane). I took the fuel pump assembly (pump, float, fuel level sending unit) out of the tank (can get the whole assembly for around $130, but was going to order just the pump for much less). Aftyer removal, I noticed a fuel hose clamp was lose and the hose was not pushed down tightly over the pumps outlet nozzle. Fuel was be pumped at the right pressure but a portion of that fuel was spilling right back out (fortunately back into the tank). A simple fix did the job this time! SO, if you are reading low fuel pressure, check the fuel pump assembly (check this hose for deteriation as well) before spending your money!
