Default Fuel light always on, tank reads empty

Hi all,

I am new to the forum so i apologise if this thread is covered, my search would not work!

I have recently bought a 96 xj which is running dual fuel. I filled the petrol tank and the gauge never moved and the empty light stayed on.

I assume this is a sending unit or float issue, what is the best way to diagnose this?

Thanks in advance

oh ps has anyone used the lucas stop power steering leak fluid to seal their steering box?. did it work?

cheers

Yeah that's a sending unit issue. I also have a 96 and that sending unit is a part of the fuel pump. Unfortunately you can't replace it separately so you're gunna have to replace the entire assembly. And I wouldn't use any sort of stop leak product. I had a leak at the rear main seal and I used some stop leak in the crankcase to try and slow it down. When I finally replaced it, the oil that drained out was bubbly, which could not have been good for my motor. So I wouldn't use any of those products and just bite the bullet and replace anything that is leaking

Default Sending unit

Just put a fule pump in my 97 yesterday. My sending unit was working out of the tank but now that its all together it doesn't want to.
x2 on what sport just said. Most likely it's the sending unit which is part of the module inside the tank. Bad part is the module is more expensive than the pump itself. Least thats what I came up with. Only suggestion I can make is check the wiring going to the unit, one wire (forgot which color) will have 5v when the key is on. This is the current to the guage. If that current is there then drop the tank and replace the sending unit.
