Default Fuel leak in '88 Cherokee, how to diagnose and fix?

Hello! I am writing on behalf of my boyfriend who seems to be taking his time in figuring out the problem and how to fix it:

He has a '88 Jeep Cherokee which is leaking fuel, and has been for well over a year. Any time he wants to drive it he will put in most $10 and go till he starts to put put and then hit up the gas station again.

We are supposed to be moving out of state 18 hours away with this car in a couple of weeks up into the snow, and I don't want to have to stop every 5 minutes for gas.

He said he doesn't know where the leak is coming from and that we'd have to put $60 worth of gas into it to see where the leak is coming from unless we could have someone who knows what they're doing take a look at it.

As recent college grads making a move up North we are very tight on money- is there any way that we can figure out the problem and fix it ourselves?

Thanks guys

Sorry, I forgot to mention then- I guess it only leaks if there's a lot of gas in it (hence him saying we'd have to fill it up), since he only keeps a little in there it's not leaking.

you gotta put enough in it to see where the leak is first ,sounds like either a hole in gas tank or the o ring around fuel pump lock ring is leaking
