Default Fuel issue

On my way to work tonight my cel came on and there was a strong odor of fuel. So I turned around and took the wires car. I noticed when I filled the tank last time approximately 2-3 Oz of fuel dripped down the rear of the tank ( closest to the axle) from the top. I am not sure where to start looking in order to find the culprit. I plan to follow the lines from the tank forward, I really don't want to have to drop the tank since I just filled up yesterday.
Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Really don't want this new to me xj to nickel and dime me to death

How do I ensure it's the fuel pump? I've never had one go bad on me and I'm definitely not a mechanic, thanks again for your help

Yeah I know it will nickel and dime me

You can turn the pump on and see if it leaks, turn the key on but not all the way and look under the jeep. Did the fuel come out at the gas station before or after you started the jeep? A hole in the gas tank will throw a cel.

Before I started it, I've had the jeep since Monday and I've filled it up twice and it just threw the cel tonight for the first time

the old owner may have never filled it up and now that you finnaly did it you found the problem. You should be able to tell if the fuel pump is leaking because it will be wet looking. Its the big ring on the gas tank that you can see if your head is by the axel. I would look into fuel cells if you need a new pump because it might be cheeper.
you can also do this...

No sir... my take is ic your tank is rotted try and find a donor from a jy xj... I wonder if you can put an older tank like mine in there. My fuel pump is on the front of the tank. Makes things easier.

Well got home from work and looked at the tank and pump both are completely dry ( I know fuel dries quickly) so I started it and i could still smell gas so with it running I started from the back and worked my way forward looking for any sign of fuel leaking from something I found nothing, so I decided to reset the computer and then took it for a drive It ran fine and no cel and I couldn't smell gas. I have no idea what to think I'm pretty sure I do have a problem but don't think it's the pump. I know it has to be somewhere around the tank since it has leaked a bit right after I fill up, I'm going to use up some of the gas and then drop the tank later this week if I don't have Anymore problems before then.

you could have a hole in the filler neck. part of it is rubber and could be cracked. did you read the code before you cleared it?

Alright after I woke up I decided I better go check again because I had a feeling it was a bad pump, went for a longer drive and got it to 210 and let it run while I got underneath and it is leaking by the pump. Dropped it off with a buddy to change tomorrow. Not having a day off until next weekend doesn't leave me enough time to change.
