Default Fuel Gauge Reading Incorrect

I have a '92 Cherokee Sport I purchased about six weeks ago so I am still getting familiar with it. It has the 4.0L inline six and auto transmission.

One of the problems I have is that the fuel gauge registers 3/4 when it is full and after using about a 1/4 of a tank it registers 1/4 full. I've replaced the instrument cluster due to a separate issue with the speedometer fluttering and the problem is the same (with both instrument clusters). Is the sending unit a possibility? Has anyone had a similar problem?

Since the fuel pump/sender is pretty easy to get to on the early XJs I would suggest crawling underneath and checking the connection and ground. Might also pull the pump to inspect the fuel level sender.

Yup, good advice. This almost assuredly is a problem with the fuel gauge "sending unit".

I replaced my fuel pump a while back and afterwards the guage now reads 1/4 less than what I actually have. My guess is the new fuel pump went in a little off clock angle. Mine mounts from the front side of the fuel tank.

I have to cram gas in my '92 to get it to register a little over 3/4 full.

I've not been able to squeeze more than about 16 gallons in it though. I thought it had a 20 gallon tank.

Low fuel light comes on at about 200-225 miles depending on terrain. You better put gas in it by 250 or so.

x2, if the pump was replaced, the float lever could be bent.
