I have a 98 cherokee sport. I recently found out, after running out of gas, that 1/2 full on my dash means I'm empty!! Only question is can I buy just a fuel sending unit for my truck or is it set up so that the sending unit and fuel pump is all one piece?

im not positive but im pretty sure you can just get the sending unit.

Pull your fuel pump and see if the float is moving freely.

I believe you can just get the sending unit, call your local parts house and ask for one. You will want to change your fuel filter while your in there as well. They prob wont have a part number for your filter but take it with you and they might have one that matches.( Just did mine.) Also use plenty of penetrating oil on your J hooks that hold the tank on. Both of mine broke on my 98, i made my own with 3/8" all thread, lock nuts, and washers. You will need the green and red wrench, to bend the all thread tho.
