Fuel gauge problem

I have a 1997 4.0 five speed, and the fuel gauge is crazy, sometimes it wants to work others.....well it doesnt, for the time being im just resetting the trip.

I pretty sure on my 90 there is a deal in the sender in the tank that can be cleaned. Alcohol was mentioned to clean it. (some sliding point I would guess).
Don't know about yours. don't know if you can check the wiring connections back there without dropping the tank, you might want to look.
Just for giggles you could try unplugging your CPS. I've seen posts where some OBD, (You are OBD II), I forget which, Anyway they said there gauges would start working when they unplugged their faulty CPS. Idk.
